The United States has congratulated President-elect John Mahama on his successful election.
In a statement, the US Secretary of State, Antony J. Bliken, also extended congratulations to Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who has made history as Ghana’s first female vice president.
The Secretary of State commended the Electoral Commission, electoral workers, civil society, and security agencies for their role in ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
Additionally, the statement lauded outgoing Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his gracious acceptance of the election results.
However, the U.S. acknowledged reports of isolated incidents of violence during the election period, which resulted in at least four confirmed deaths. Extending condolences to the families of the victims, the U.S. called for thorough investigations and accountability.
“The United States is proud of our enduring partnership and friendship with the people and government of Ghana. We look forward to working closely with President-elect Mahama to carry our historic relationship into the future,” the statement concluded.
