The British High Commission in Accra has dismissed an employee over visa fraud allegations.
A statement from the High Commission confirming the dismissal did not put out the name and nationality of the employee but the High Commissioner, Jon Benjamin in a tweet said it was a Ghanaian national.
The dismissal took effect from Thursday February 26, 2015.
The commission said it viewed the employee’s conduct as “gross misconduct” and added that Ghanaian law enforcement was now investigating allegations of fraud and conspiracy relating to visa applications.
The statement said though such cases are extremely rare, the British High Commission takes allegations against any of its staff extremely serious and, if substantiated, will always take the strongest possible action.
“This issue came to light precisely because of the strong internal audit and control mechanisms we have in place to monitor our entire visa operation. We continue to have full confidence in the overall integrity of those mechanisms,” the statement said.
