Canada to sign trade, investment deal with Ghana

independence-archCanada has hinted of its pursuit to sign a new trade and investment agreement with Ghana, a top official said May 13, 2013.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird has signalled his country’s intent to deepen trade and investment with Ghana which it sees as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

According to a statement from the Canadian Foreign Ministry, Mr Baird and Ghana’s Forein Minister Hanna Tetteh agreed that finalizing a foreign investment promotion and protection agreement is a matter of priority in relations between the two countries.

Mr Baird said “Such an agreement, once in effect, will help bolster investment confidence to make the most of the abundant opportunities that exist here, contributing to job creation and economic growth in both countries.”

“Our government is committed to increasing trade and diversifying our engagement with fast-growth countries like Ghana,” added Baird.

The Canadian Governor General, David Johnston,  is currently on a state visit to Ghana. He is joined by a delegation of Canadian public and private-sector leaders in the fields of business, education, innovation, social justice and development and they are expected to share their experiences and knowledge with their counterparts and play an active role in highlighting Canada’s involvement in the country.

According to Canada, these exchanges will further develop the wide-ranging and multi-faceted relationships with Ghana and will provide greater visibility for bilateral co-operation initiatives.
