The Chinese government is to provide scholarships for between 20 and 30 brilliant, needy students in Ghana every year.
The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mrs Sun Baohong, who announced this, said so far over 500 students, many of whom were girls, had benefitted from similar scholarships in the past.
Mrs. Baohong made the statement when she paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, to discuss issues of mutuall benefit to the two countries.
The visit was also to strengthen the existing bilateral relationship between Ghana and China.
The Ambassador stated that the Chinese government had helped tremendously to improve the educational sector of the country.
On infrastructural development, she said her government had helped in the construction of some schools, including the University of Health and Allied Sciences in the Volta Region.
Mrs. Baohong shared some of her concerns about the health sector in the country, saying the health of the citizenry was very key, and therefore experts and professionals were needed to improve the quality of skilled personnel in the country.
She assured the minister that should the personnel in the health sector require any particular training in future, her country would always be ready to lend a helping hand.
“At the request of the Ghana government, we organised a bilateral training course for 20 Ghanaian midwives in China at a medical college,” she stated.
Nana Oye Lithur emphasised the need for women to be economically empowered.
“When women are empowered economically, they will create more wealth which will enable them to engage in enterprises and industries even at the macro level,” she said.
Nana Oye said the gender ministry would urge women to take advantage of the increasing trade between the two countries.
She also stated that the ministry was striving very hard to address the problem of street children, especially that of female hawkers on the streets.
