A Former Brazilian Minister for Social Development and Fight Against Hunger, Mrs.Marcia Lopes, is in the country to take part in the first ever National Social Protection Conference schedule to take place tomorrow in Accra..
Her visit has been necessitated by the recent approval of a cabinet memorandum on Social Protection which is to ensure the effective and efficient coordination of social Protection programmes in the country.
Welcoming Mrs Lopes at the Kotoka International Airport over the weekend, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, said the Ministry—which is mandated to ensure gender equality, promote the welfare and protection of children, and to empower the vulnerable, excluded, the aged and persons with disabilities, for sustainable national development—had started working on the approved memorandum and as part of the implementation initiatives, had invited the former Brazilian Minister to share her experiences in bringing together different social Protection programmes which were components of the BOLSA Familia Cash Transfer Programme in Brazil.
According to the Minister, Mrs Lopes experience sharing would involve meeting with key stakeholder Ministers and managers of various complementary interventions to effectively deal with extreme poverty and vulnerability.
“She will also give a public lecture on social Protection as well as engage in some media activities to galvanize public support for social protection in Ghana,” Nana Oye Lithur said.
Mrs Lopes said it was gratifying to share some of her experience with the people of Ghana.
