The Unique Shepherd (US), Group of Companies, an indigenous Ghanaian entity, and the AquaGreen Fish Farms of Israel have entered into a partnership to undertake a large scale fish farming project in Ghana.
AquaGreen is expected to inject capital and equipment as well as technical experts in fish farming to lift up the operations in Ghana.
At a media briefing in Accra to announce the deal, Chief Godfred Medicine, Executive Director of the US Group, said barring any unforeseen hitches the partners would start production in October this year.
He said the expertise and in-depth knowledge and skills in aquaculture being brought on board would help diversify production of other fishes, including shrimps.
As part of the deal, a team from US Group of Companies will visit Aqua green Farms in Israel in May this year and a reciprocal visit from the Israeli experts to Accra is scheduled for June.
Mr. Medicine said he was confident that the challenges faced by the US Group due to some technical challenges which the company did not have reasonable control over would be a thing of the past.
Mr. Daniel Kedem, Former Israeli Ambassador to Ghana and Representative of Israels AquaGreen Farms, said the company would conduct its business in a manner to allow for zero-discharge aquaculture systems for the production of chemical free seafood.
He said as fish farm production expands worldwide, the challenge has been water, limiting harmful discharge into land and surface waters near fish farms, adding that with the technical expertise the two companies would ensure environmentally and sustainable production of fish.
We aim at clean and pollution free production and non-contamination of fish stock, he said, producing to meet demand in the domestic market as well as for export.
Mr. Kedem said with aquaculture the consumer have full visibility of the source of fish and the that production facilities would be opened to the public when production starts to ensure they see at first hand the processed involved in production.
He said the system that could be installed both in the sea and on the ground would allow for the production of variety of fishes species.
Mr. Kedem said acquaculture is the fast growing sector globally, averaging 8.8 percent annually compared to poultry at 2.8 percent.
