The Australia High Commission has welcomed seven new Australian volunteers to Ghana.
The volunteers are part of the Australian government’s aid programme to strengthen the capacity of Ghanaian institutions towards sustainable development.
A statement issued by the High Commission in Accra on Friday, copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the seven new volunteers, comprising professionals in the fields of research, curriculum development; human resource management, resource mobilization and advocacy would be joining their counterparts in Ghana to help achieve sustainable development.
It noted that these professionals would work with both the government and civil society organizations for up to 12 months to enhance the capacities of their host organizations by transferring skills and exchange knowledge.
It said the Australian government, through the Australian Agency for International Development, supports two volunteer programmes in Ghana: The Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development and the Australian Volunteers for International Development.
The statement said these programmes provide a flexible way to respond to development needs in Ghana by mobilizing professionals and young volunteers on short and long term assignments.
“Since May 2010, these programmes have placed 43 professional volunteers in over 30 organizations across the Western, Northern, Greater Accra, Central and Ashanti Regions,” it said.
The statement said more host organizations are being sought in focus sectors of food security and agriculture, mineral resources, governance, community engagement and humanitarian assistance, as well as crosscutting themes such as gender and disability.
