The Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Nesha Alaouvi M’hammdi, on July 30, 2014 held a festive reception at her residence in Accra to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the enthronement of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
The event, which had the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Mrs. Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare in attendance, marked the allegiance of the people of Morocco to the monarchy for over twelve centuries.
Addressing the gathering at the ceremony, Ambassador M’hammdi underscored King Mohammed’s commitment towards enhancing the political system of Morocco by solidifying governing principles such as Separation of Powers and Rule of Law, broadening the powers of the Legislature and mandating an independent Judiciary.
The Ambassador said that Morocco and Ghana enjoy long-standing bilateral ties dating back to as far as the formation of the Organisation of African Union (now AU), which according to her also reflects the shared ambition of both countries for a prosperous and united African continent.
Mrs. M’hammdi, however, observed that Ghana-Morocco diplomatic relations which used to center on history and goodwill has evolved into a more matured and proactive one due to profound changes affecting the world, adding that there was a need to adapt to these new realities in order to fortify the relations between both countries.
“At one time cooperation between Ghana and Morocco was based on trust and historical ties. Today it increasingly hinges on efficiency, performance and credibility”, she said.
Ambassador M’hmmadi also emphasized the importance of promoting south-south cooperation by encouraging inter economic partnerships among African countries in order to ensure that African people become principal beneficiaries of the vast wealth of the continent.
In demonstration of her country’s commitment to the south-south cooperation, the Moroccan Ambassador revealed that ADDOHA Group, a leading Moroccan construction company, in partnership with the Government of Ghana, has begun the construction of a 60 million euro cement plant in Tema.
She further disclosed an impending agreement by both parties to further construct 10,000 social housing units which is expected to cost 250 million euros.
Touting Ghana’s democratic and diplomatic credentials, Ambassador M’hmmadi also expressed her appreciation to Ghana for supporting its candidacies to international organizations, particularly in the human rights field.
The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Mrs. Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare, on behalf of the government, extended warm solidarity to HM King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people on the commemoration of one of the most significant events of Moroccan history, adding that the government of Ghana is looking forward to more mutually-beneficial partnerships with Morocco in the future.
Also in attendance to mark the occasion were some members of the Ghanaian diplomatic community including German Ambassador Ruediger John, US Ambassador Gene Cretz, and Australian High Commissioner Joana Adamson, among others, as well as some religious and traditional leaders.
