An exhibition of art and craft has opened in Accra to mark the 50th anniversary celebration of the death of Dr W.E.B Du Bois.
The three-day event is being organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Art and the National Commission on Culture to promote Pan-Africanism.
In a tribute to Dr Du Bois, also known as father of Pan Africanism, the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare described him as a true son of Africa whose great achievements helped transcend boundaries of time and space.
She said “the creative art industry has attracted international attention over the last few decades because of its contribution to national development through wealth creation and employment’.
She explained that, the sector was endowed with much talent; creativity and innovation which could be used to benefit the tourism industry.
Touching on protection for the art and creative industry, the minister stated that, she was aware of the illegal exploitation of the work of the creators and would put in place measures to curb the intellectual property right.
She disclosed that, her ministry would support the Swiss-funded project under the ministry of trade and industry and Attorney Generals Department aimed at developing conducive policy framework for the intellectual property regime to ensure strengthening and protecting legal and institutional rights of arts practitioners.
The exhibition featured collections from the National Art Gallery, Art Institutions and individual artists.
